Understanding FIV in Rescue Cats

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) is often misunderstood. Many potential adopters shy
away from FIV+ cats, believing them to be “sickly” or dangerous to other pets. The reality is
quite different.

What is FIV?

FIV is a virus that affects a cat’s immune system, similar to HIV in humans. However, it is
specific to cats—humans cannot catch it. Most importantly, it is not easily spread between
cats; it requires deep bite wounds (blood-to-blood contact) to transmit. Casual grooming and
sharing water bowls are generally safe.

A Long, Happy Life

With a good diet, a stress-free environment (like Cat Heaven), and regular vet check-ups, FIV+
cats can live normal, long lifespans. They do not require daily medication, just a watchful eye
for minor infections. Don’t overlook an FIV+ cat; they have just as much love to give.
